The solid workflow: sheets first, angles second, pages last
The way to make a comic that looks like one artist drew every page. Write your characters, objects and places down, set up the camera with the 3D tools, and only then draw pages. Then fix what's off with Fix an area, redraws and Pro Studio.
Most comics that fall apart do so for one reason: the pages were drawn before the world was decided. The hero's jacket changes colour on page four, the café gains a second window, the sword gets shorter. A reader does not need to name the problem to feel it. The story stops feeling real.
Comic artists solved this long before computers. Hergé kept strict model sheets for Tintin and his cast, so a face drawn in 1950 matched one drawn in 1975; the clean, even line he became known for, later called ligne claire, only works when every drawing follows the same rules. Osamu Tezuka went further and kept a "star system": a fixed cast of character designs he reused across different stories like actors, each with a set look. Both started from the same idea. Decide the design once, then draw to it.
This guide is that idea, step by step, on Inkroost. It is slower to start than typing a sentence and pressing Draw my first page, and it is much faster to finish, because you spend your credits on pages you keep instead of pages you redraw.
The order matters:
- Character sheets, with a reference drawing
- Object (prop) sheets
- Place sheets, with floor plan facts
- Camera angles in the 3D room, and poses
- Only then: draw the pages
- Fix what's off: Fix an area, continuity, redraws
- Fine-tune exactly in Pro Studio
Each step makes the next one better. Skipping one does not break anything, but it shows up later as drift you have to fix by hand.
1. Character sheets: decide who they are, then draw them once
Why first. A drawing has no memory of the page before it. Every page, the image is made fresh from the words it is given. If those words say "Mara", it has to guess what Mara looks like, and it guesses differently every time. A sheet is the memory. From the moment a character has a sheet, every page whose text names them is drawn with that sheet attached, automatically.
How. Open your series in Creator Studio, go to Series info, then Characters, places and props, and under Add a sheet press Character (or Place or Prop for the next steps). If you work with Inky, it writes sheets for you before it draws anyone, and asks how they look when they come from your own story.
What to write. Write what makes the character recognisable at a glance, not what makes them interesting:
- Hair: length, colour, style, parting.
- Eyes: colour and shape.
- Skin and build: tall and wiry, short and broad.
- Usual outfit, down to the colours.
- One or two distinctive marks: a scar, round glasses, a red scarf they never take off.
Do: "Shoulder-length black hair parted on the left, narrow grey eyes, tall and thin, olive skin, long navy coat over a white shirt, small scar through the right eyebrow."
Don't: "A mysterious, brooding detective with a troubled past." That tells the drawing nothing it can draw.
Draw the reference. Press Draw the sheet to get a reference drawing of the character in your series' look. Words describe; a picture fixes. This drawing is what holds a face steady from page to page, so take the time to get it right. If it is off, change the sheet and draw it again before you draw a single page with them in it.
Learn from the masters. Look at how Hergé's characters are built from a few strong, simple shapes: Tintin's quiff, Haddock's beard and cap. Distinctive silhouettes survive any angle and any drawing. Give your lead one or two features like that and they will be recognisable even in a tiny background panel.
Common mistakes
- Personality instead of appearance. Keep personality in your notes; the sheet is for the look.
- Two characters with nearly the same description ("young woman, brown hair"). Make them different in silhouette: hair shape, height, outfit colour.
- Changing the outfit mid-chapter without saying so. If they change clothes, say it in that page's text.
2. Object sheets: the things that keep coming back
Why. A phone, a sword, a car or a family ring redesigned on every page is the most common drift after faces, and readers notice it in close-ups.
How. In the same list, add a sheet for each object that appears more than once. Describe it like a product listing: shape, size compared with a hand, materials, colours, and anything counted ("three round lenses in a triangle, top-left corner"). Counted, placed details are what keep it identical. Add the short names your story actually uses, like "her phone" or "the blade", so the sheet is picked up when you write them.
Common mistakes
- Describing what it does instead of what it looks like.
- Leaving out the scale. Say how big it is next to a hand or a person.
3. Place sheets: decide the room before anyone stands in it
Why. Moebius, the French artist behind Arzach and The Incal, is remembered for worlds that feel lived in: every city, desert and corridor has its own logic, and it never contradicts itself. You do not need his skill to get the same effect. You need the room decided, so the second scene in the café happens in the same café.
How. Add a place sheet for every location your story returns to. Fill in Floor plan facts, the strongest thing on the sheet. Describing a room in sentences leaves the drawing free to choose a different number of windows every page; counted things on named walls do not. Write facts like:
- "Counter along the east wall, three stools in front of it."
- "Two windows on the street side (south), door between them."
- "Spiral staircase in the north-west corner."
Then draw the place's reference, the same way as a character.
Common mistakes
- Mood instead of layout ("cosy, warm"). Keep the mood for the page text; the sheet holds the furniture.
- Forgetting which wall things are on. Left and right change with the camera; north, south, east and west do not.
4. Camera angles and poses: set up the shot like a film set
Why. Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira is studied for its environments: whole city blocks drawn in convincing perspective from many viewpoints, always the same city. That consistency comes from knowing the space in three dimensions before choosing where the camera stands. Jack Kirby is the reference for the opposite skill: bodies in dynamic poses, limbs thrown towards the reader with strong foreshortening, so action reads instantly. On Inkroost, the 3D tools give you both.
The 3D room. On a place sheet, open 3D room and camera angles and choose Set up the 3D room. The room is built from your floor plan facts as simple blocks. Nudge any block that sits wrong and add missing ones. It is deliberately plain: it is a layout lock, not a render.
Camera angles. Drag the view until it frames a shot your story returns to, like the shop entrance seen from the counter. Name this view with the words your pages use, for example "shop entrance, front door", and save it as a camera angle. From then on, any page whose text uses those words is drawn from that exact viewpoint, with the room's shape sent along. You can also choose an angle for one page under More options in the chapter.
Poses. For a character pose you can't describe well in words, open the page in Pro Studio, pick the character, choose New pose, then Pose a mannequin. A plain grey figure opens in 3D. Tap an arm, leg, head or hips, then turn it with the rings or the Bend, Twist and Side sliders. Drag around the figure to choose the camera. Only the pose carries over: the character is still drawn from their own sheet.
Learn from the masters. Before you save an angle, ask what a director would: where is the viewer standing, and why? A low angle makes a character loom; a high one makes them small; a wide shot gives the reader the geography before the close-ups begin. Will Eisner, whose Comics and Sequential Art is still a standard text on the craft, treated the panel as a stage and the reader's eye as the audience. Set your establishing angle first, then the reverse angle for conversations, and reuse them.
Common mistakes
- Saving one angle per page. Save the few viewpoints you return to; that is where the consistency comes from.
- Naming angles with words your pages never use. The name is how pages find the angle.
5. Only then: draw the pages
Why now. With sheets, a room and saved angles in place, every page is drawn with the right faces, the right objects, the right furniture and a known camera. You stop paying for pages that were never going to match.
How. Write each page's text the way you would brief an artist: who is in the panel, what they do, where the camera is, and what the reader should feel. Use the names on your sheets and the words of your saved angles. Keep it to one clear beat per panel.
Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics names the jumps a reader makes between panels: moment to moment, action to action, subject to subject, scene to scene. Most good pages are mostly action-to-action and subject-to-subject. If every panel jumps to a new scene, the reader gets lost; if every panel is a tiny moment, the story crawls. Pick the jump on purpose.
Naoki Urasawa's Monster is a lesson in pacing across pages: quiet panels that let tension build, and the turn of the page saved for the reveal. When you plan a chapter, decide where each page ends. The last panel on a right-hand page is where a question belongs.
Common mistakes
- Too many panels with too much text. If a page needs nine panels, make sure each one earns its place.
- Using nicknames the sheets don't know. Add them to the sheet's names, or use the full name.
6. Fix what's off: Fix an area, continuity and redraws
Why. Even with everything set up, a drawing can come back with an extra finger or a prop in the wrong hand. Fixing one part is cheaper and safer than redrawing the whole page, because everything you liked stays.
Continuity. Every new page is compared with the pages before it and with your sheets. Each drawing gets a Continuity score and a short list of what was found. When a page has more than one drawing, the best continuation is marked Recommended.
Fix an area. Press Fix an area on a drawing in review, or from a kept page's menu. Circle the problem with your mouse or finger and say what should change: "she should have five fingers on this hand", "the ring is on her left hand". Only the circled area is redrawn, and the result appears next to the original so you can choose. Where the continuity check found a problem, Fix this opens the editor with the area already circled.
Redraw the whole page only when the page itself is wrong, the staging or the moment, not a detail. Use Draw this page again, and change the page text first so it does not come back the same.
Common mistakes
- Redrawing a whole page for a hand. Circle the hand.
- Vague fix notes ("make it better"). Say exactly what should be different.
7. Fine-tune exactly in Pro Studio
Why. The Creator Studio decides the page for you from your words. Pro Studio lets you decide it yourself: where every panel goes and what is in each one. It is for the pages that matter most, like a cover, a splash page or the reveal at the end of a chapter.
How. Open any page from its menu with Open in Pro Studio. It is open to every creator and you pay for each drawing with credits, with the price shown before you draw. It works on a computer or a tablet.
- Lay out the page: start from a layout or draw your own frames, split and merge them, set gutters and bleed.
- Build each panel in parts: background, character, prop and effects are separate layers you can move, resize, flip, hide or draw again without touching the rest.
- Take a panel apart: turns an existing panel into layers, with the background filled in behind them.
- New pose and Pose a mannequin for exact body language.
- Lettering stays editable on top of every layer.
A Pro page is an ordinary page: it shows in the reader, exports and the Creator Studio, with a Pro badge.
Common mistakes
- Using Pro Studio for every page. Use it where precision pays off; let the Creator Studio draw the rest.
