A two-panel comic page showing a telephone conversation. The top panel shows an elderly woman with white curls in a green cardigan holding a black rotary-style handset. The bottom panel shows a younger woman with a brown bob and silver streak wearing a green apron and fingerless gloves, also holding a handset. The background features a dimly lit brick interior with wooden crates filled with leaves. Visible text, in reading order: Ida: He promised them a bed until spring. Ida: He died before the thaw. Fern: We almost cleared away his guests.

Acerca de este capítulo
A leaf rising at Room Eight leads Fern and Wren to a tray that refuses to be cleared away. Hidden silk cocoons reveal that the dead night watchman was keeping a promise to his winter guests. With Ida's memory to guide them, they move the undisturbed tray to a cool, sheltered corner rather than a shredder or a heated glasshouse. The watchman lets go when care means leaving something alone. Back in the corridor, rippling water carries a bell from Room Nine.
